Check out this great little Flickr pool. Just googled WPA Gothic, and got that: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=signpaintersgothic&w=all

I think WPA is a little more smooth around the corners, and rounds off on the top edges, but it's inline with what I was thinking. Great find!

I'm looking around right now to see what I can find. It shares similarities with Reforma Grotesk, but the R has a slight curve on the foot, and this sign goes straight.

I'll let you know when I find it, this one is driving me crazy.

Thanks a lot!
Yeah, the rat signs are still everywhere, on every line. Although i've found as of late the NRW/Q line seems to be the most ratty. Isn't it fun to watch tourists point them out?

Hey man, came across your site via a Twitter post. Love the photos! I was originally born in Brooklyn and I can't tell you how much I miss those wonderfully (and sometimes tactfully) placed "We Kill Rats" signs.

Thanks for posting these!

I was about to defend the designers of the website, because the website is antiquated too, just antiquated in Internet terms. The narrow width and small text is a function of smaller monitor resolutions from the late 90s. And the vertical navigation, the kitschy folders and clip art, and the extraneous options (few sites offer foreign language options because google translate will do the job / bookmark us nowadays are social bookmark icons, not browser based buttons) were all standard practice a decade ago.

In fact, the use of the front page image to create motion on the site and the consistent style of the site would have made this site well designed by early web standards. So it's not that it's a bad site, it's that it's an out of date site.

Until, that is, I took a look at the source code. One might figure that the company build the site in 1997 and never invested that much in it again. So, it's not a designers fault, it's some cheapskate that doesn't understand the importance of a good looking website, or just doesn't care. But, while some of the scripting dates back to 1997, there's been design choices made on this site up until 2003. It looks to me like there was some designer that didn't consistently improve the design to meet updates to web layout and design conventions.

So yea, it was a good site for when it was made in 1997, but there were designers working on it past then that just let it go to shit.

Here's the Utrecht Art Supply store M.A. recalls, and note their address is indeed listed as Fourth Avenue:

I was just walking from the cube at Astor Place up to Union Square today, so I can confirm this firsthand. :-) That said, you're right that apart from this one stretch, the street becomes Park Avenue.

How about the strip between Union Square and 9th/10th Streets though? That's Fourth Avenue! It eventually turns into Park (and is Cooper Square further south), but it's still 4th Avenue for several blocks in between. I used to go to an art store called Utrecht there years ago, don't know if it's still there.
