Yo New York,

I’ve only lived in New York for two years, but I’ve always had friends who were going to school here. So I always had an excuse to visit and hang out in the city for the weekends. One of my good friends went to Pace University, which is right in the heart of the Financial District, and a stones throw away from the World Trade Center. (Which feels weird to say Ground Zero as a New Yorker, it seems to be how tourists refer to it.)

So once in a while, in the middle of the night we would visit the site to see the progress. At the time there were still the open construction scaffolding walls and plywood barriers that people would leave memoirs on. It was interesting, and sometimes heartbreaking to read about the things that people wrote. This one always struck me, because loved how simple the narrative was.

I took this photo in the summer of 2006.

Here’s where we are today.

Note: This is World Trade Center One, which is formerly known by it’s Bush era moniker: “The Freedom Tower.” It’s difficult to get pictures of the memorial installations by night.

Tip: As lonely as the Financial District is in the evening, this is the best time to see the site. It’s quiet. Tourists, and cheap memoir vendors are nowhere to be found. Construction goes on 24/7 though.
