New York has a lot of issues with dealing with fires. As most of the buildings in Manhattan are taller than 3 stories, fires are a pretty big deal.
Common on the streets, you’ll find “standpipes” which FDNY uses to hook into the water system. I’m not exactly sure how they work, but they make a great seat in a hitch.
Near these standpipes are usually signs to give information to the firefighters about the fire protection systems, and where water can be found. Most of them are downright ugly.
But these, are surprisingly well set, fully justified condensed sans on red. Beautiful.
